Corporate Video Analysis

Corporate Video Analysis

Apple Recruitment Video

This expensive and very impressive  video begins with exterior shots of Apples headquarters to establish were it's taking place the images are being narrated by one of apples workers who we then see as a talking head. That is followed by several other employees of different sex and ethnicity aged between 20 and early 50 talking about how much care apple puts into its products and staff. The talking heads are very well lit and are framed mainly in a mid but occasionally in a close up.
To really reiterate how multicultural their company is there are several  interviews with different foreign women talking in their native language with English subtitles appearing on screen.I personally didn't like this feature because seems like the only reason its in the video is to show off and exaggerate how much they welcome other cultures. It just feels a bit forced and unnecessary.

There are cutaways used of the new iPad being planned and constructed including a CGI animation showing the iPad being developed.
Shots of very high tech and expensive equipment is shown to tell what you could be working with and it would make someone applying for a job there very excited. The reason the corporate video uses a variety of people with different ethnic backgrounds is so everyone watching feels like it can relate to them and it makes Apple look like they welcome you

no matter what you look like. The employees really do keep emphasizing how much apple cares and how they will never give up and along with the music it gives for quite an uplifting effect and I found it really enjoyable to watch. The video gives the impression that Apple is a very calm and fun place to work for just to try and seduce you in but in actual fact I bet it's very stressful.

Homefield Vets

This corporate video is very low budget which makes it very different in comparison to the apple video. It begins with some very happy upbeat music and the visuals include a company logo and text saying "Veterinary Clinic" and the company name.Animated paw prints then appear on screen, the paw prints instantly let you know its something to do with animals. The talking heads are all framed in a close up and are nicely lit the talking heads are all introduced with big close ups of the interviewee smiling which have been overlayed with a green filter and and the persons name and job title is in the bottom left hand corner of the video. The audio from the interviews is played under the all visuals. The cutaways include shots of the work place which gives a good impression of the work conditions and others include shots of the vets working with the animals, most of which are puppies and kittens to bring out the emotion and get the "aww" factor from people. At 0:50 the practice manager is talking about their employed surgeons and it cuts to shots of the surgeon in action.Everybody shown in the video is smiling, this is to make the enviroment seem like its a very enjoyable and happy place to be in and you don't actually think that the only reason you would be there is because there's a problem.

London Business School

The corporate video for the London Business School is introduced with a very sunny blue sky the shot then tilts down to reveal the exterior of the school, this is followed by a short montage of both lecturers and students from different ethnic backgrounds and ages in a lesson. It is accompanied by very bland fast paced electronic music. As the music levels decrease a talking head which is framed in a close up intercuts. As the program director explains the nature of the course cut always are used to further emphasize and help explain what he is describing. The fact that he is looking into lens of the camera also helps the viewer believe he is talking directly to them.

This is followed by several short vox pops featuring people of a different sex and ethnicity. This choice as been made to subconsciously demonstrate equality in the work place. The vox pops look very dull and boring in comparison to the initial talking head as they haven't been lit or framed as well as they could have been. This would be due to timing and practicalities
After a very short transition sequence consisting of creative exterior shots of London we are shown a segment explaining more about the school but this time instead of a talking head this section of the video is guided by a narration. The video follows the same conventions the entire way through for the remainder of the duration.Although I personally find the video at ten minutes a little to long and slightly boring I can understand that it would appeal to those who the video is intended for and I believe it fits its purpose very well.
October 22nd

The day had finally arrived for Colin our client to come and watch both the Documentary and the Promo videos that we have been working very hard on the past few weeks. He wasn't due to arrive until 11am so it  gave us some time to tidy up and perfect the video ready for its viewing. We didn't need to do a whole lot because most of the tidy up and been done a few days previous.I came up with a few improvements like using Vignettes over the video to make the drill hall clips look more dull and dreary than it actually did and I also colour corrected and graded the video to fit the look and feel we wanted to achieve. Colin was very impressed with both the videos and thoroughly enjoyed our promo piece. Although we did a satisfactory job I don't particularly like the video because the pre-production wasn't good enough  so when it came to the filming we didn't get enough footage that we needed and when I see the piece now I realize how much potential it had and with a few more shots like a time lapse sun set and better voice over it could of been something I would have been really proud of.

Editing

Editing began on the promo video,we all gathered into pairs to edit a part of the promo video. As we were logged into the server we were all able to edit the same project on seperate macs.I opened up Final Cut and brought in the previously recorded voice over into a new sequence so it wouldnt interupt anyone elses work.

We listened to the narration and did an edit to match the audio but we then discoverd that there wasnt enough footage do what I wnted to had to make a non literal edit.I wasnt entirely happy with the edit as the footge was really poor.

On Saturday we went to Thornham to film the opening of the new hall.We started off by filming exterior shot of the new hall We used the Panasonic 151.

Shots of the building were filmed first we also shot individual parts as of the building as we thought they would make great cutaways if needed. We then filmed the shield arriving and followed it inside.Later on the owners did several speeches which we filmed.

I was on sound which means I was in charge of all the audio.I recorded audio to the Panasonic 151 camera via a shotgun or rifle mic which is connected with an XLR cable I used this mic because it's good at picking up sound from one particular direction and worked very well during the filming of the speeches.I used a boom pole which allowed me to record from further away.

I believe the filming went very well and I really enjoyed the whole day but it would of been nice if we could have done a recce prior to shooting just to ensure we knew what to do.

On Tuesday we gathered in our group to discuss how we were going to shoot the promo video. We decided on everybody's roles I chose to be on sound because it allowed me to get to go to thornham. Some of us where set to do research and planning and others drew up some story boards to show what the footage will look like.We then booked out the necessary equipment needed for Saturday.
